“Best AI website builder” lists usually rank tools by whoever pays the biggest commission. This page takes a different approach: first figure out which kind of tool fits your situation, then pick a specific product. The approach matters far more than the brand.

The three approaches

1. Hosted site builders with AI features

You sign up, describe your business, and the platform generates a starter site you edit visually. Hosting, security updates, and templates are handled for you.

Good for: local businesses, portfolios, and anyone who wants to edit by clicking instead of touching code.

Trade-offs: you’re tied to the platform; moving later can be painful. Monthly costs continue as long as the site exists. AI-generated starter copy is generic until you replace it with real details.

2. Static site + AI assistant (how eTarget is built)

You use a static site generator such as Astro or plain HTML, and an AI assistant like Grok writes code and drafts content with you. You publish the finished files to a static host or your existing web host.

Good for: content sites and blogs (including ad-supported sites), people comfortable copying files and running a command or two, and anyone who wants fast pages and full ownership.

Trade-offs: there’s a learning curve. You’ll need to deploy updates yourself or set up automatic deploys. No visual editor by default.

3. AI agents that build and deploy

An agent such as Grok Bot works on its own computer: it can write the files, build the site, test pages, and (with your permission and credentials) deploy. You review and approve rather than doing each step yourself.

Good for: people who know what they want but don’t want to do the technical steps; repeated site maintenance tasks.

Trade-offs: you must review its work carefully and set limits on what it can change. You need to be comfortable giving it access to hosting, ideally limited to one site’s folder. Read What Is an AI Agent? first.

How to evaluate any AI website tool

Use the same five tests on every tool you consider. Spend an hour on a free trial or free tier before committing.

  1. Generate a homepage from your real details. How much of the output is specific to you, and how much is filler?
  2. Check the code or page speed. Run the generated page through a speed test such as Google’s PageSpeed Insights. Slow pages hurt visitors and rankings.
  3. Test on a phone. Real phone, not just a resized browser.
  4. Try to leave. Can you export your content? If not, factor in the cost of being locked in.
  5. Read the AI data policy. What happens to the content and business details you enter?

A prompt to help compare:

I'm choosing between [tool A] and [tool B] for a [site type] site.
My priorities: [e.g. low ongoing cost, edit without code, fast pages].
Based only on their official websites (link your sources), compare them on those priorities.
If you can't verify something, say so instead of guessing.
