Grok vs Grok Bot: What's the Difference?
People often use the names interchangeably, but Grok and Grok Bot are different products from xAI that you use in different ways. This explainer sticks to what xAI has publicly documented; sources are linked at the bottom. Where something isn’t clear from public sources, it’s marked for the site owner to verify.
The one-sentence version
- Grok is a conversational AI assistant: you ask a question or give a writing task, and it answers in the chat.
- Grok Bot is an agent product: you give named “Bots” a task, and they complete multi-step work on their own persistent cloud computer (browser, files, terminal, connected apps), coming back when they need your approval. [1][2]
Side-by-side
| Grok | Grok Bot | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Conversational AI assistant from xAI | “AI teammates” / always-on agents from xAI [2][4] |
| How you use it | Chat on grok.com, the apps, and X | Message a Bot (type, dictate, or voice) in the Grok Bot desktop or mobile app [1] |
| Where the work happens | In the chat response | On a persistent cloud computer with a browser, filesystem, and terminal [1][3] |
| Typical output | Answers, drafts, explanations, code snippets | Finished multi-step tasks in your real tools (files, apps, websites), with drafts you approve before sending [1] |
| Runs when you’re away | No; it responds when you message it | Yes; xAI says Bots keep working 24/7, even with your laptop closed [2][4] |
| Access | grok.com / X / apps (TODO: verify current free vs paid tiers) | Docs say it’s included with paid individual Cursor plans and Cursor Teams, or via a linked SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, or SuperGrok Heavy subscription [1] |
When to use which
Use Grok when you want to think, draft, or learn: brainstorming ad angles, explaining a concept, writing a first draft of a page, or debugging a snippet. See How to Use Grok Effectively.
Use Grok Bot when the job involves doing things across tools: researching and compiling a spreadsheet, building and testing files, or running a recurring routine. According to xAI’s docs, Bots can work inside connected apps, learn routines from a workflow you show them, run in parallel, and pause for approval on sensitive actions. [1][3][5]
What carries over
The prompting skills on this site apply to both. With an agent, two parts of the prompt matter even more:
- A checkable definition of done (“a CSV with these columns, saved to this folder”).
- Explicit limits (“draft emails but don’t send them without my approval”).
Use the “Agent task brief” template in our Prompt Library.
Other publicly documented details
- xAI’s docs list desktop apps for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and mobile apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android. [1]
- All Bots on an account share the same cloud computer, each with its own screen; xAI notes the screens are separate work surfaces, not separate security boundaries. [3]
- Bots can read public X content without an X account connected; private X data requires connecting the X plugin. [3]
- You can tag @bot on X to hand a post to your main Bot, where available by region. [1]
- xAI’s launch post described Grok Bot as in beta at launch, with its own usage separate from Grok and Cursor plans. [2]
TODO for the owner (unclear or changing)
- TODO: Verify current Grok plan names, free-tier limits, and prices on grok.com before publishing. We list none.
- TODO: The launch post says “beta”; the product page FAQ mentions general availability for Enterprise. Confirm the current status. [2][4]
- TODO: Confirm whether usage limits/reset periods have changed (docs say usage resets weekly). [1]
- TODO: Add first-hand screenshots of both products and a short “what I used each for this week” section.
